The History of Physics
1963
Erik Nitsche was a Graphic Designer and one of the creators of the Swiss Modern style. Born in Lausanne, Switzerland, Nitsche began his life doing illustrations and graphics for multiple magazines and newspapers. Throughout his lifetime, Nitsche worked with top notch companies such as Bloomingdale's, Decca Records, and 20th Century Fox.  He created beautifully unique designs for magazine covers, album covers, advertisements, posters, and illustrations. His biggest client was General Dynamics Corporation, a US defense conglomerate. The company hired Nitsche to produce posters for their corporation that would not give away any information and conveyed a feeling of peace. Nitsche also had an interest in the graphics associated with books. After producing covers for many books, he decided to open his own company, Erik Nitsche International. ENI produced many pictoral history books, including, "History of Physics," "History of Weaponry," and "History of Land Transportation." Nitsche decided to use colorful and interesting graphics in order to capture the reader further into the information. Nitsche moved to Munich and continued to produce work until his death in 1998.

General Dynamics Annual Report Covers
Erik Nitsche is a unique graphic designer that, unfortunately, becomes overshadowed by other artists of the time, such as Paul Rand. However, his work should be reexamined for it's beauty and brilliance. He is a perfect example of "less is more" when it comes to design and he understood how to capture attention exceptionally. His work, to me, shows the very essence of the beginning of the Graphic Design. Although the field today is growing immensely, his work embodies the fundamentals of Graphic Design. I strongly encourage anyone to take a look at his work and learn from it. He is one of my favorite designers, and an amazing one at that.
