Salvador Dalí
(May 11, 1904 – January 23, 1989)
Salvador Dalí is a Spanish painter, sculptor, graphic artist and designer. Throughout his life Dalí used many artistic styles, however in 1929 he decided to join the Surrealists. He also began to paint with a common theme around this time. Dalí became inspired by Sigmund Freud's theories on the significance of subconscious imagery. He began to induce himself into hallucinatory states that were translated into his surrealistic works. His art often portrayed dream-like atmospheres with impeccable detail. Dalí's works always represent subjects that were very personal to him, as well as events occurring in the world. His most famous work is titled, The Persistence of Memory, consisting of melting clocks. Because his amazing work and his eccentric style, Dalí's work can be found just about anywhere and his name is recognized throughout the world.

I have always known about Salvador Dalí's work, however it was until two years ago that I fell in love with his style. While visiting the Philadelphia Museum of Art I viewed a painting titled Soft Construction with Boiled Beans (Premonition of Civil War). Dalí painted this piece during the Spanish Civil War. The piece, showing a woman pulling her distorted body apart, symbolized the war and tension that was occurring is his country at that time. Although many people may think of it as dark, the painting truly stuck with me and pummeled me with emotions. From there I decided to look more into Dalí's work and fell in love. His work has a dream-like quality and the objects in them are always interesting. Last year I was pointed to a short movie that Dalí created with Walt Disney. It was not only beautiful to watch, but it was amazing to finally get into Dalí's head and see how he worked and what he thought. The movie took his known artistic style and put them in motion.
