This week in my digital design class we are beginning to use Adobe Flash to create an interactive environment. Therefore this week I decided to discuss my favorite digital artist, Han Hoogerbrugge.

Han Hoogerbrugge is a Dutch digital artist born in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Beginning as a painter and cartoonist, Han changed to digital when he discovered the internet in 1996. He has created many works, including interactive online series such as Hotel. As stated before, Han began with prints and drawings but when he discovered the internet he incorporated his works onto the web, such as a series called Modern Living Neurotica. Between 2002-2007 Han began making a website, Nails, consisting of short interactive animations, inviting the user to play around. He has also worked with musical acts creating music videos for their songs. On August 8th, 2008 Han began a series called Pro Stress and included a sale of limited edition pill boxes, to accompany the series, sold exclusively on his website. The subject for most of Han's works are himself, making the experience for the artist and user much more fun.

A still from the wonderful Modern Living/Neurotica series
I have always loved interactive design online, so when I came across Han's work I had so much fun. You never knew playing with his work what was going to happen. One of my favorites of his is called Pigs. When you first load the animation you see 5 gentlemen standing in suits. You wonder why then it is called Pigs? As your mouse moves over each man his pants drop while doing an individual pose... while singing. The humor in this animation, and others, mixed with the uncertainty of what may happen keeps you wanting to see more work. If you are a fan, like me, then you will be excited to hear that Han created a huge series, called Hotel, which mixes his art within a game. In Hotel the user has to get to the next stage by point-and-click method but you can still see his unique style on random clickable items. If anyone is interested in his humorous, innovative style there are many links below that will show you how much fun interactive animation can be.
